Latin America and the Caribbean is a region defined by history rather than by a single people or language. It runs from Mexico south through Central America and across South America, then out into the island chains of the Caribbean Sea. Spanish is the most spoken language, but the region also holds Portuguese in Brazil, along with English, French, Dutch, and dozens of Indigenous and creole tongues. The countries here share centuries of colonial contact and independence struggle, yet each one arrived at its own culture, economy, and identity. This page lists them all, from the North American edge of Mexico to the Guianas on the South American coast and every island between Cuba and Trinidad.
