The
Balkan Mountains are a mountain range in
southeastern Europe. They run mostly through
Bulgaria, stretching from the border with Serbia in the west to the Black Sea in the east. The highest peak is
Botev at 2,376 m, located in central Bulgaria. In
Serbia, the range enters briefly, where
Midžor (2,169 m) is the highest point on the Serbian side. The Balkan Mountains are important for history, climate, and nature. They are not as tall as the Alps, but they are wide and form a natural divide between northern and southern Bulgaria. Towns near the range include Troyan, Kalofer, and Shipka in Bulgaria, and Zaječar in Serbia.
Balkan Mountains ski area
The only ski area in the Balkan Mountains is called Stara Planina, and it is located in eastern Serbia, close to the border with Bulgaria. The resort is also known as Babin Zub. It has modern lifts, wide slopes, and is good for people who want a quiet place to ski. The highest ski runs go up to about 1,900 meters. While most ski resorts in the Balkans are in other mountain ranges, Stara Planina is the only one inside the Balkan Mountains range.
