The Dinaric Alps are a long mountain range in southern Europe. They are not part of the Alps; they are a separate mountain system that formed in the western Balkans. The Dinaric Alps run along the eastern side of the Adriatic Sea, through countries like Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Albania. Bosnia and Herzegovina has many high peaks, with Maglić (2,386 m) as the highest. Montenegro has Zla Kolata (2,534 m), the highest peak in the Dinaric Alps. Albania has the tallest peak in the range, Maja Jezercë (2,694 m). Croatia includes the coastal section, with Dinara (1,831 m) as its highest point. Slovenia includes part of the Dinaric Plateau, but most of its ski areas are in the Julian Alps, which are part of the Eastern Alps, a completely different mountain system. Serbia lies on the eastern edge of the Dinaric Alps, with lower peaks like Tara. Kosovo and North Macedonia include some southern branches, but their tallest peaks belong to other nearby mountain systems, not the Dinaric Alps.
