The Apennines are a long mountain range in Italy. They run from the north to the south of the country. The highest peak is Corno Grande (2,912 m), located in the central Apennines, in the Gran Sasso area. The Apennines pass through many Italian regions, including Tuscany, Umbria, Lazio, Abruzzo, Campania, and Calabria. In the north, they start near the city of Genoa. In the south, they reach all the way to the tip of the Italian Peninsula. Some small mountain chains also continue in Sicily. The Apennines are not as high as the Alps, but they are very long and important for Italy’s geography, water sources, and weather.

Apennines ski areas

The Apennines have ski resorts, but they are smaller than those in the Alps. The biggest resort in the northern Apennines is Cimone, located in Emilia-Romagna. In central Italy, Abetone in Tuscany is one of the most popular. In the Abruzzo region, there are two important resorts: Roccaraso, which is the largest in the southern Apennines, and Campo Felice, which is often visited from Rome. Campo Imperatore, located on Gran Sasso, is one of the highest ski areas in the range.
