Rila–Rhodope Massif

This post was last updated by José of onez on Friday, 13 June 2025.

The Rila–Rhodope Massif is a large mountain area in southern Bulgaria. It includes three main ranges: Rila Mountains, Pirin Mountains, and Rhodope Mountains. The Rila Mountains have the highest peak in the Balkans, Musala (2,925 m). The Pirin Mountains are just south of Rila, with Vihren (2,914 m) as the top peak. The Rhodope Mountains are older and lower, with Golyam Perelik (2,191 m) as the highest point. This massif is fully in Bulgaria and covers a large part of the country’s south and southwest. It is known for forests, rivers, and many protected natural areas.

Rila–Rhodope Massif ski areas

Rila Mountains ski resort

The Rila Mountains have one of the oldest ski resorts in Bulgaria, called Borovets. It is close to Musala Peak, the highest in the Balkans, and about 70 km from the capital, Sofia. Borovets has many slopes and is popular with both locals and visitors. There is also a small local ski area called Panikovets, used mostly by nearby villages.

Pirin Mountains ski resort

In the Pirin Mountains, the main ski resort is Bansko. It is the largest and most modern ski area in Bulgaria. It is close to Vihren Peak, the second-highest in the country. Bansko has many slopes and good facilities, and it attracts people from other countries too. There is also a smaller area nearby called Dobrinishte, which has fewer slopes and is also known for its hot springs.

Rhodope Mountains ski resorts

The Rhodope Mountains have two main ski resorts. Pamporovo is the most popular in this area. It is known for sunny weather and easier slopes, making it good for families and beginners. It is near Snezhanka Peak, which is lower than the Rila and Pirin peaks. The second resort is Chepelare, a smaller place close to Pamporovo. It is used more by locals and has fewer crowds.
