Palikir, capital city of Micronesia

Palikir is the capital city of Micronesia

Palikir is the relatively understated capital of the Federal States of Micronesia. Located on the island of Pohnpei, the city is short on traditional tourist sights but big on opportunities for adventure. Travelers hoping to explore the island's natural habitat and water activities have much to look forward to when they arrive in the city.

The island of Pohnpei has a circumference of only 130 km, and Palikir is located within a short drive from all of the major attractions. Sokehs Rock is one of the most popular sights in the country. A hike to the top of the massive rock outcropping yields some of the best panoramic views of the island, and there are still a few Japanese guns from the Second World War at the top.

Nan Madol is another must-see. Visitors can explore the thousand-year old ruins of the former royal city. Constructed on artificial islands, the ruins gave the area the nickname “the Venice of the Pacific.”

The island is one of the world's greatest surfing destinations. To catch the best waves, visit from late October through April. Kolonia Harbor, Lighthouse Pass and Palikir Pass are all favorites of experienced surfers.

Diving and snorkeling are also popular activities on the island. There is one PADI certified dive center, but visitors can rent snorkeling gear from many places in the city. Most of the diving is along reefs, and there are no natural beaches because the island is encircled by a belt of mangroves. The ocean is easiest to access at Nett Point.
