We learn that Earth has seven continents—North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and Antarctica—but the United Nations sorts the land differently for its data. Because no one lives in Antarctica all year, the UN leaves it out and works with five big regions: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. Each of these is divided into smaller parts, giving 22 sub-regions in total: Africa (Northern, Eastern, Middle, Southern, Western); Americas (Northern America, Caribbean, Central America, South America); Asia (Central, Eastern, Southeastern, Southern, Western); Europe (Northern, Eastern, Southern, Western); and Oceania (Australia & New Zealand, Melanesia, Micronesia, Polynesia).
